Retired Waterford principal named interim North Stonington principal

North Stonington — The Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday night to appoint former Waterford High School Principal Don Macrino as interim principal of Wheeler High School/Middle School.

Principal Christopher Sandford announced in September that he would leave the district to take the position of headmaster at the co-ed, independent Woodstock Academy. Sandford has been at Wheeler for nearly six years, starting as an assistant principal for two years before moving up to become principal.

Macrino will take over as the interim principal Nov. 25 and will finish out the end of the academic year.

Macrino started his career as an English teacher at New London High School before becoming dean of students there. He then became assistant principal of Clark Lane Middle School in Waterford before becoming principal of Waterford High School in 1997. He retired at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
