School board OKs Ledyard contract for administrators

Ledyard — The Board of Education on Wednesday approved the latest version of the Administrators’ Association contract and will forward it to town hall — the first action taken on the contract following a tense discussion between school officials and the Town Council in December.

At the Dec. 10 Town Council meeting, Chairman Linda Davis and other councilors criticized the school board’s handling of the negotiations and declined to take any action on the contract, saying they had not yet received enough information.

Even if the councilors had wanted to vote on the contract, Councilman Mike France said he did not think it was legally permissible. Multiple versions of the document had been filed with the town clerk and, France said, it appeared that the most recent version had not been officially approved by the Board of Education. Now that the school board has unanimously voted in favor of the updated contract, the Town Council will be able to accept or reject the contract at its Jan. 14 meeting.

Members of the school board did not discuss the criticism from the council on Wednesday. Board of Education Chairman Julia Cronin and other members praised the school administrators, calling them “a great team.” Board member David Luke, who gave a brief presentation on the contract, defended the 2.5 percent yearly salary raise for administrators, which he said will keep their wages in line with those offered in demographically similar districts.
