New London — The potential for dangerous thunderstorms has prompted the cancellation of tonight's fireworks show and band concert at Ocean Beach in New London, general manager David Sugrue posted on his Facebook page Friday evening.

"There is a chance that it won't rain, but also a chance that we have dangerous storms like yesterday," Sugrue said. "There were several people hit by lightening yesterday and also two homes. The park is wide open and if we did have a storm we don't have enough safe cover for a crowd of this size."

According to an Ocean Beach schedule found online, the night was to have kicked off at 8 p.m. with 102.3 The Wolf presenting Steve Smith and The Nakeds Horn Band, followed by fireworks.

Sugrue apologized for the cancellation and said he would be working on rescheduling the event at a later date.
