Eastern Pequots elect four to Tribal Council

North Stonington — Members of the Eastern Pequot Tribe elected four new members to the Tribal Council on Saturday, while three councilors’ terms came to an end.

The council now has 12 members, Katherine Sebastian Dring, the council’s chairwoman, who was not up for re-election, said Monday.

Newly elected were Natasha Gambrell, Shianne Sebastian, Mitchel Ray and Derrick Strong.

In addition to Sebastian Dring, the sitting councilors are: Brenda Geer, vice chairwoman; Valerie Gambrell, treasurer; Lynn Powers, recording secretary; Tyrone Gambrell; Larry Pemberton; La’Tasha Maddox; and Carole Maddox.

Joseph Perry, a longtime member of the council and most recently its treasurer, retired from the council and was appointed tribal ambassador, Sebastian Dring said.

Juan Hazard resigned from the council while Joanne Silva Njoka was not re-elected.

Voting took place during the tribe’s annual meeting, during which the tribe marked its 334-year history. Roy Sebastian, Chief Hockeo, the tribe’s sachem for life, celebrated his 91st birthday. He served as chairman of the Eastern Pequots from 1976 to 1997.
