Five sixth-grade students from Mystic Middle School organized a Thanksgiving food drive for the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center that resulted in the school’s students donating more than 750 food items to the center.

The students — Emory Anderson, Jack Flaherty, Rachel Hambly, Sydney Plant and Cate Statchen — turned the drive into a “Food Wars” competition in a successful effort to boost donations.

According to the rules of the competition, a student’s grade would receive one point for each food item they donated. But when a student brought in a hygiene product and put it in another grade’s bin, that took a point away from that grade.

After all the points were tallied, the fifth-grader students came out on top.
