New London — In remembrance of the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut, along with the Connecticut College Hillel and several local Jewish congregations, will host the 2019 Community Holocaust Commemoration Program at the Zachs Hillel House at Conn College on Sunday.

The program starts at 2 p.m. and will feature guest speaker Endre (Andy) Sarkany, a Holocaust survivor who grew up in the ghetto of Budapest Hungary during World War II.

Born in 1936, Sarkany survived the Holocaust while living in a building that housed a nursery and kindergarten, as well as a ballet studio. Sarkany continued to live in Hungary after the war, even as it became a communist nation, until 1956, when he immigrated to the United States. Since then, he has worked for the McDonald Douglas Corporation and IBM Corporation.

Over the last 10 years, Sarkany has traveled to schools to speak to students about his personal experiences surviving the Holocaust, living under the Soviet regime and then finding a home in the United States.

Following Sarkany’s talk will be a candle-lighting, readings, prayers and instrumental preludes.

“Fateless,” a 2005 Hungarian film depicting a teenaged boy’s life torn apart after he was sent to a concentration camp, also will be shown at 3:30 p.m., following the commemoration, at the Olin Science Center.
