Montville High School to hold graduation at Tyl Middle School

Montville — The high school will host an unusual graduation, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at the Tyl Middle School parking lot on June 17.

Last week, the Board of Education decided that one car per senior will be allowed. Cars will be directed into spaces 6 feet apart, and a stage will be set up on the grass divider between the two lots. Everyone will stay in their cars.

People will be asked to tune in to a radio station to listen to the proceedings. Class speakers, who will each have their own microphone, will mount a lift individually to give their speeches, and the event will be livestreamed so people can watch at home.

Once the ceremony is over, police and volunteers will direct cars to three designated diploma pick-up stations. A videographer will be at each station, and each will be livestreamed and transmitted over its own radio station. The school is aiming for about 45 cars at each station.

At these checkpoints, seniors, in full regalia, will exit their car, take their diploma, and their name will be read before getting back in their car. Video footage from the event will be spliced together and shared with graduates after the fact.
