New London — Safe Futures, the agency that supports victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in southeastern Connecticut, has moved this year's Safe Walk fundraiser online due to the coronavirus pandemic and is inviting participants to "run, walk, bike, hop, dance or cartwheel" through their own 4K between Oct. 1 and 4.

Because it's a virtual event, participants who register for the 4K Your Way Safe Walk as individuals or part of a team can complete the 4-kilometer distance any way they choose, said a press release from Melissa Porter Zaitchik, Safe Futures director of development and communications.

"The scourge of domestic violence in our communities is only worsened by the ongoing pandemic," said the press release. "Victims — adults and children alike — face not only the physical harm of living in a violent home but, should they flee, are now more likely to encounter homelessness and hunger. Safe Futures continues to help families and individuals navigate these crises, and your support is vital to that effort."

The honorary chairman for this year's event is Mike Buscetto, owner of Filomena's Restaurant in Waterford. Buscetto is an invaluable ally to Safe Futures, helping to raise awareness and bring community members together to stop domestic violence, said Zaitchik.

Participants are asked to tag Safe Futures in social media posts as they complete the 4K Your Way for a chance to win prizes. The team that shows the most spirit will win the Purple Sneaker award. In 2019, New London High School won the Purple Sneaker for incorporating its pep band, cheerleaders and student athletes in the fundraiser.
