Kindness in Real Life: Election-themed blanket drive benefits Griswold dog rescue

All Paws on Deck, a newly formed dog rescue non-profit organization based in Griswold, found a way even before the election to unite Reds and Blues for a good cause.

The group posted on its Facebook page a pledge for donations of either red blankets (Trump supporters) or blue blankets (Biden supporters),

“It was an impromptu idea,” says organizer Susana Burgess.

She saw a post on the Hub City Humane Society Facebook page showing a picture of a bin at Walmart, with blankets advertised for $2.50, and a caption saying dogs would love them.

“I went to the Walmart website to see if they still had those available in Lisbon, and the ones available were either Dog House print, in red or a plaid blue style,” Burgess said in an email. “Since people are so polarized and they all have strong feelings about their Blue or Red beliefs, I created the campaign and shared with friends... I was happy to find common ground in such a divisive topic.”

She said friends quickly started to pledge their blanket donations and instead of just one, they were pledging four or even eight blankets, with blues trying to out vote reds, and vice-versa.

All Paws on Deck will continue buying and shipping the blankets with the donations received. To participate, email allpawsondeckct@gmail.com with a note stating “Red” or “Blue.”
