Dolphins being demolished at State Pier in New London
New London — Workers with contractor Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman were continuing the process of removing the mooring dolphins Tuesday from the State Pier complex.
The work is part of the ongoing conversion of the pier into a facility capable of accommodating offshore wind turbine assembly and staging.
A dolphin is a human-made marine structure that extends above the water level and is not connected to shore. Dolphins are usually installed to provide a fixed structure when it would be impractical to extend the shore to provide a dry-access facility.
The dolphins date to the time when the submarine tender USS Fulton was based there, 1951 to 1991.
