Amtrak police, local officers teach railroad safety in Groton, Mystic

Amtrak police and local law enforcement officers teamed up in Groton and Mystic this week for 'Operation Clear Track,' an initiative meant to raise awareness and enforce safe railroad crossing during Rail Safety Week.

The largest railroad safety initiative in the country, the program mobilized 500 local, state, federal and railroad law enforcement departments in 48 states across the nation to educate folks about railroad safety.

Officers were stationed at the School Street railroad crossing in Groton and the Broadway Extension railroad crossing in Mystic on Tuesday, according to Amtrak.

To help raise awareness, officers handed out railroad safety cards to motorists and pedestrians and were issuing warnings and citations to violators of railroad crossing laws. The goal of the initiative is to reduce railroad-related deaths and injuries, Amtrak said.
