Old Lyme zoning board contest triggers ballot recount
Old Lyme — The town will conduct a recount Monday of all of the ballots cast in the Nov. 2 election because of a seven-vote margin for a seat on the Zoning Commission.
Town Clerk Vicki Urbowicz said officials will only recount the race for the Zoning Commission five-year seat beginning in 2022, which was picked up by Democrat Mary Jo Nosal. She received 1,600 votes to Republican Sloan Danenhower's 1,593 votes.
Urbowicz said a recount was avoided in the Board of Finance alternate race because Democrat Sarah E. Michaelson, who lost to Democrat Katherine Thuma by nine votes, waived her right to the recanvass.
A recount is triggered when the margin is within 20 votes or 0.5% of the total vote, according to state statute. The state law also requires that the recount take place within five business days of the election.
The recount will be held at 6 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the mezzanine conference room of Town Hall.
