Black History Month flag-raising celebration to be held in Groton
Groton — A Black History Month flag-raising celebration will be held here next week.
The event will take place from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Town Hall, 45 Fort Hill Road, according to an event notice.
Members of the public are invited to join Town Councilor Portia Bordelon, “the DEI Collaborative, Town Staff and Officials, along with Groton Community Members in commemorating Black History Month with a flag raising celebration event.”
Bordelon was the driving force behind planning the event, while town staff members are primarily working on the logistics. The Groton Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Collaborative also is supporting the event.
The town has announced the following speakers and participants in the event: Bordelon; Pastor Joseph L. Coleman of St. John's Christian Church; State Comptroller Natalie Braswell, Town Councilor Aundré Bumgardner; actress and vocalist Rae’Ven Kelly Dinwoodie; Arianna Stanberry of Fitch High School and Berklee College of Music; Larissa Tabb of the University of Connecticut-Avery Point; Kolton Harris of the Connecticut Office of the Arts; Town Councilor Juliette Parker of the New London NAACP; and Kevin Booker Jr. of Connecticut College.
