Kindness in Real Life: Giving hope to kids in Ukraine

Despite the fast-paced, modern society we live in, empathy and the spirit of giving is everywhere as seen through behavioral technician and movement therapist Gail Tittle, who has raised about $100 for Ukrainian children.

The primary reason this project was created was to spread hope for the children in Ukraine.

“I came up with this project when the war in Ukraine started. First off on a personal level, (I was wondering) what (I could) do to help, especially with the children in need,” Tittle said.

The project that began with students decorating and writing messages of hope for the kids in Ukraine soon turned into a large-scale fundraiser.

“So we sent out a newsletter and order forms ... to Juliet Long School and Gales Ferry Elementary School. We also put up posters all over the buildings. The donations started pouring in from the students and the parents and the faculty,” Tittle said.

In addition to helping the kids in Ukraine, this project has taught Tittle’s students important lessons.

“I thought it was a great way to set our students apart as leaders in the community: to teach them empathy and to teach them to think a little bit more globally and that they have a voice and that they can be of help to someone else,” Tittle said.

Ms. Tittle started working as a movement and behavioral technician at Ledyard Transition Academy after becoming interested in helping kids with differing abilities.

“It’s hard work but it’s very, very fulfilling when you are able to teach someone their first words and to help with some behaviors and just to give students a leg up on life,” Tittle said.

Overall, the purpose behind this fundraiser is to spread love and hope among those who need support.

“I just want kids to know that they can make a difference. We have to lift each other up in this world and kids can ... bring (others) a few moments of joy,” Tittle said.
