55 Coast Guard academy cadets disciplined after sharing answers to homework

New London ―The U.S. Coast Guard Academy announced Wednesday that 55 cadets are being disciplined after they distributed answers for two separate homework assignments electronically in violation of academy policy.

Academy officials investigated each cadet’s involvement during a series of disciplinary hearings in what was termed “an unauthorized collaboration” in a news release announcing the discipline.

“Individual misconduct varied amongst the 55 cadets, and disciplinary actions were assigned on a case-by-case basis, according to their actions,” the news release stated.

Disciplinary actions under the cadet regulations and academic consequences included:

    • Six cadets failed the course.
    • 48 cadets received lowered grades.
    • 11 cadets were removed from their summer battalion command positions.
    • 55 cadets will undergo a 20-week honor remediation program.
    • 55 cadets were restricted to the Coast Guard academy.

“The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, honor, and accountability,” said Capt. Edward Hernaez, commandant of cadets in the news release. “Misconduct like this undermines trust and those found to have violated our principles were held accountable for their actions.”
