    Local roundup: Schooners blank Newport 2-0

    Groton — Kumar Nambiar pitched six shutout innings for his third win as the Mystic Schooners defeated the Newport Gulls 2-0 on Saturday night in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School.

    Nambiar (Yale) scattered five hits and struckout five to improve to 3-0 while lowering is earned run average to 0.39. He did not walk a batter. Matt Geoffrion (Maine) pitched a scoreless seventh and Thomas Girard (Duke) earned his third save by striking out six over two dominant innings (he walked one). Girard's ERA is 0.00.

    The game was scoreless until the sixth when Chris Sullivan (Hartford) delivered an RBI doubled to give Mystic (11-9) the lead. Mic Wilson (Stony Brook), who also doubled, and Sebastiano Santorelli (Seton Hall) had two hits apiece for the Schooners, who are home again Sunday night to face the Danbury Westerners at 6 p.m.

    Newport is 10-9.

    Tigers win

    • Luke Sherley drew a bases-loaded walk with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Connecticut Tigers a 5-4 win over the Staten Island Yankees in a New York Penn League. The walk forced in Dayton Dugas, who started the inning with a double. The Tigers (5-10) swept the three-game series after coming off a franchise-worse 10-game lolsing streak.

    The Tigers took a 4-1 lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Teddy Hoffman hit a two-run double and scored on Jose Quero's RBI single. Connecticut starter Carlos Guzman allowed two hits and one run over four innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Groton overcame an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Waterford 6-4. Groton trailed 4-3 going into the seventh inning before taking the lead when Ricky Ramos cleared the bases with a double. Ramos and Kyle Egan had two hits apiece for Groton (Egan had a triple). Waterford starter Jordan Hancock pitched four shutout innings.

    District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

    • Pawcatuck advanced to the championship round with an 8-7 victory over Groton in nine innings. Pawcatuck will face unbeaten Waterford on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Waterford and must beat the hosts twice. A win Sunday would force a winner-take-all game on Monday at 5:30 p.m. 

    District 6 Babe Ruth (13)

    • East Lyme scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Waterford 5-2 in Game 3 of the best-of-five championship series at Washington Park in Groton. East Lyme leads the series 2-1 and can wrap up the district title with a win on Sunday at noon, also at Washington Park. Owen Elmer pitched 6.2 innings to earn the win, allowing five hits and striking out 10. He also had two hits. Sean O'Connell pitched well for Waterford, allowing only five hits in 5.1 innings while striking out seven.

    District 10 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Mystic defeated Pawcatuck 10-1 as Payton Neal had two hits, including a home run and four RBI, while Jackson LaLima went the distance allowing five hits and striking out 12. Dylan Cimini went 2-for-3 to lead Pawcatuck.

    • Groton defeated North Stonington 2-1 on Friday night despite the combined no-hit effort of North Stonington's Kyle Kessler and Sean Bergel, who combined for 11 strikeouts. Ehan Chaves and Braxton Rios scored runs for Groton while pitcher Nathan Virtue pitched a home hitter, a solo home run to Kessler in the first.

    • Waterford defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 17-9 on Friday night as Mathew Orys had three hits, including a two-run homer, while Quinn Speller, Nick Petrini and Zach Ruest each had two hits. Jaden Reyes had a two-run double for Lyme/Old Lyme, which scored all of its runs in the second.

    District 10 LL baseball (9-10)

    • Waterford defeated Mystic 3-1 has Nick Ingraham allowed only one hit while striking out eight over 5.2 innings. Ingraham also went 2-for-3 while Matthew Shampine and Colby Sheehan each had a hit. Jacob Schrage pitched five strong innings for Mystic.

    District 10 LL softball (9-10)

    • Waterford defeated Salem 8-2 as winning pitcher Ava Majeski struck out 12, Charlotte Jessuck and Jenna Long had two hits apiece, Paige Jessuck drove in three runs and Elle DiBuono had an RBI. Violet Maisarz and Grace Dubtava had two hits each for Salem.

    • Groton/Mystic defeated Salem 8-3 on Friday night as Emma Robinson and Hailey Merrill combined to strike out 13. Merrill also had two hits, including a double, while Maerin Lyon had an RBI double and Lauren Pelletier an RBI triple. Kate Erickson had two hits for Salem while pitchers Violet Maisarz and Tatum Young combined for 12 strikeuts.

    • Waterford defeated Pawcatuck 25-1 on Friday night as Paige Jessuck was the winning pitcher and MacKenzie Griffin and Lindsay Houle had hits for Pawcatuck.
