Black Wolves trade Kyle Buchanan to Seals

Mohegan — The New England Black Wolves traded Kyle Buchanan to the San Diego Seals, the team announced Monday.

In the trade, the Black Wolves received a second-round pick in the 2018 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft (26th overall) and a third-round selection in the 2021 draft. In addition to Buchanan, the Seals, which will compete for the first time in 2018-19, also received New England’s last third-round selection (33rd overall) in the 2018 draft.

"We entered this offseason with Kyle Buchanan in our future plans, but as an unrestricted free agent, Kyle informed us he wanted to explore free agency," Black Wolves general manager Rich Lisk said by way of explanation.

"With the expansion draft coming, we didn't want to protect Kyle, who wasn't 100 percent committed to being a member of the Black Wolves. After weighing all the options, it was in the best interest of the organization to make this deal with San Diego and recoup a second-round pick vs. losing Kyle for nothing in return."

Signed as a free agent in 2014 while the franchise was still in Philadelphia, Buchanan, a forward, recorded 308 points in five seasons with the team. In 2017, he had career-bests of 69 points, 31 goals and 38 assists. Buchanan had 50 points on 19 goals and 31 assists during the 2017-18 season.

New England finished 9-9 during the 2017-18 regular season and was eliminated in the East Division semifinals at Rochester.
