    Local roundup: Paesani to be inducted into Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame

    John Paesani, who spent 26 years as the club professional at Norwich Golf Course and enjoyed a distinguished career in state and national events, will be inducted into Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame on Tuesday at the Woodway Country Club in Darien.

    Paesani and Dr. Bob Ruby, a longtime volunteer with the CSGA and USGA, will be honored during a ceremony at 4 p.m.

    Paesani, 59, has been a PGA member for 32 years. He played in the 1991 U.S. Open, the 1988 and 1997 PGA Championship, 2010 and 2011 U.S. Senior Open and nine PGA Tour events, including the the Greater Hartford Open seven times.

    A graduate of E.O. Smith High School in Storrs, Paesani was the Connecticut Section PGA Player of the Year four times, was a four-time state section champion, the 2001 Tournament of Champions winner and the 2001 Connecticut Open champion.

    He also captured the Section Vardon Trophy (low stroke average) eight times and was inducted into the Connecticut Section PGA Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2014, he won the PGA of America Quarter Century Winter Championship only six months after undergoing treatment and multiple surgeries for colon cancer.

    Paesani also set five course reocrds, including one at the Golf Cluib of Avon when he shot a final round 64 to rally for a win in the 2001 Connecticut Open.

    Women's basketball

    • Unbeaten Trinity College started the second half on an 18-2 run and cruised to an 80-44 non-conference win over Coast Guard Academy in Hartford. Trinity (6-0) outscored the Bears 54-20 in the second half after leading by only two, 26-24, at the break. Freshman Emma Puddington had a career-high 14 points and five rebounds to lead Coast Guard (3-5) while Annabella Farabaugh added 12 points and Zoe Riis-Fallica had five assists.

    College honors

    • CGA's Puddington was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week in women's basketball. Puddington had 20 points, 11 rebounds (nine defensive), five blocked shots and eight steals during a pair of wins last week, including six defensive rebounds, four steals and three blocks in a 101-41 win over Mount Holyoke. Puddington is averaging 8.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in seven games.

    • UConn freshman Christyn Williams was American Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball. The guard averaged 21.5 points while shooting 72 percent from the floor dring victory over then-No. 1 Notre Dame and then No. 16 DePaul. She scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting against the Fighting Irish.
