    Local roundup: Witkowski leads Coast Guard men past Wheaton

    Norton, Mass. — Packy Witkowski scored a game-high 16 points while Tyler Perez added 14 points off the bench, leading Coast Guard Academy to a 76-57 win over Wheaton College on Wednesday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's basketball game.

    Luke Daniels added 12 points for the Bears, who improved to 16-7 overall and 7-7 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton dropped to 11-12 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

    In other games: 

    • Steffen Brunson scored 31 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists, pacing Mitchell College past Southern Vermont 82-74 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Domenico Santiago had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Hasani Williams added 12 points for Mitchell (16-8, 10-5).

    • Jai Smith scored 14 points and had 19 rebounds as St. Thomas More beat the Post University junior varsity 96-57. Jared Garcia had 14 points and nine rebounds, Ryo Kobayashi scored 20, Nick MacDonald scored 18 and Jair Currie had 10 points for St. Thomas More.

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College lost to Eastern Nazarene 85-69 in an NECC game. Amina Wiley had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Jessica Lohneiss scored 18 and Kelsey Hernandez had 10 points for Mitchell (15-9, 14-3).

    • Junior Brenna Wood had a career-high 16 points in Coast Guard Academy's 71-61 loss to Springfield in the NEWMAC. Junior Zoe Riis-Fallica added 14 and freshman Kyra Hartman finished with 13 points for Coast Guard (7-17, 5-10).

    • Connecticut College (13-10, 4-6), which qualified for the New England Small College Athletic Conference touranment as the No. 8 seed, will play at top-seeded Bowdoin College (24-0, 10-0) in quarterfinal action Saturday. The Camels are making their sixth straight appearance in the league tournament. The teams will meet for a second time in a week, as Bowdoin posted a 69-58 win on Friday.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Woodstock Academy won its 10th straight Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament title. The Centaurs won with a score of 142.8, with the Killingly/Putnam/Tourtellotte co-op second at 133.65, Stonington third with 131.7 and Norwich Free Academy fourth with 108.75.

    Woodstock took the top three spots in the all-around, with Jenna Davidson winning with 36.6. Lydia Taft was second at 36.0 and Ali Crescimanno tied for third at 35.85 with Killingly's Kiera O'Brien.

    Crescimanno won vault (9.35) and bars (9.5), Davidson won beam (9.2) and Taft won floor (9.6). Stonington's Hanna Laskey was fifth in vault (9.15) and fifth in bars (8.3) and Lexi LaPerle of Ledyard was fifth in beam with 8.05.
