    Local roundup: Conn College, Coast Guard women's swimming set school records at D-III championships

    Greensboro, N.C. — Olivia Haskell anchored the 800-yard freestyle relay to a fifth-place finish in a school-record time of of 7 minutes, 26.75 seconds to lead the Connecticut College women’s swimming team on the third day of the NCAA Division III Championships.

    Haskell swam the fastest split (1:50.82) for the Camels, who are in 17th place (54 points).

    Vaughn Ammon, Maddie Ford and Andrea Higgins teamed with Haskell on the relay and earned an All-America status. They topped the record set by Emma Rotner, Sam Pierce, Valerie Urban and Haskell at the 2016 Division III championships (7:28.75). Maeve Wilber also finished 10th in the 100 backstroke (56.06).

    Also at the meet, Coast Guard’s Sarah Passilla, Kristen Durham-Young, Emily Benson and Josie McGuire finished seventh in the 800 freestyle relay in a school-record time of 7:29.60.

    In the men’s meet, Coast Guard’s Chasse Sodemann earned All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke for the second time in his career and finished eighth (55.08). Eric Fuhs also placed 17th in the 100 breaststroke (55.66).

    On Thursday, Coast Guard's men's 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams earned honorable mention All-America status. The 200 free team of Dan Jenkins, Joe Rodriguez, Tyler Dominick and John Pompay placed 11th (1:22.19) while the 400 medley team of Jenkins, Sodemann, Patrick Jackson and Rodriguez placed 16th (3:21.45).

    Sun sign Kiesel

    • The Connecticut Sun announced Friday that they signed 5-foot-7 guard Brianna Kiesel to a training camp contract. Kiesel currently plays for Pszczolka AZS-UMCS in Poland where she’s averaged 20.3 points, 4.1 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 steals in 16 games. Kiesel was selected 13th overall by the Tulsa Shock in the 2015 WNBA Draft and played 57 games over three seasons with Tulsa (2015), the Dallas Shock (2016), and Atlanta Dream (2017). Connecticut opens its regular season against the Washington Mystics on May 25 at Mohegan Sun Arena (7:30 p.m.).
