    Local roundup: DelaCruz leads Mitchell to a doubleheader sweep

    New London — The Mitchell College baseball team collected 29 hits in a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of Southern Vermont on Sunday.

    Mitchell (17-6, 5-1) had 11 hits in a 13-6 win in the opener and added 18 in a 19-5 win in Game 2. Former Montville standout Dougie DelaCruz led the way going 4-for-8 with six RBI, a home run, double and four runs scored. Markus Melendez had five hits on the day, Steven Pagan had four hits and Sam Majewski drove in four runs. Ryan Solimone (4-1) went the distance in the opener, striking out 12 with no walks. Former Norwich Tech standout Bryce Bedard pitched two scoreless innings with five strikeouts in Game 2. 

    In other games:

    • Waterford's Collin Bakken pitched a four-hitter in Game 2 as Avery Point salvaged a doubleheader split with a 2-1 win over Morris Community College. Morris won the opener 16-5. Bakken gave up four hits, an unearned run and struck out three with three walks. In the first game, Noah Yokoi was 3-for-3 with a double and Brayden Cooney doubled and homered for the Pointers (8-11).

    • UConn fell to Cincinnati 10-4, losing the American Athletic Association three-game series at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford 2-1.  Pat Winkel homered and scored twice and Anthony Prato, Anthony Nucerino and Winkel had two hits each for the Huskies (19-12, 5-4).

    College softball

    • Mitchell College split its NECC doubleheader with Elms, losing the opener 8-7 before winning 5-4 in Game 2. Suzanne Vachon had four hits and scored three runs in the two games, Sydney Oatway had four hits and drove in three runs and Alex Lopez had three RBI for Mitchell (8-11, 1-5).

    Men's tennis

    • Connecticut College lost to No. 2 Middlebury 7-2 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference match. Freshman Julian Tien won at No. 3 singles for Conn (5-6, 0-4) along with the doubles team of Guillermo Garcia Rincon and Will Cannon at No. 2 doubles.

    H.S. girls' track

    • Montville finished third at the Bellringer Invitational on Saturday at East Hampton. Lauren Ross led the Indians with a first-place finish, a second and two thirds. Ross won the long jump in 16-4.5, was second in the 100 hurdles and took thirds in the 300 hurdles and high jump.

    Mackenzie Clark of Montville won the triple jump at 33-5.5 and 4x100 relay team of Lauren Velazquez, Mackenzie Clark, Michaela MacCracken and Lexi Peck won in a time of 53.01. Peck was second in the 100 and Jenny Alarcon (shot put) and Savanna Perkins (javelin) had third-place finishes.

    H.S. boys' track

    • Derek Strickland won the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.0, leading the Indians to a third-place finish on Saturday at the Bellringer Invitational at East Hampton. Tyrone Mack of Montville had second-place finishes in the shot put and discus and teammate Ashwin Kurichi was second in the triple jump.

    Montville got third-place finishes from Nasem McIntosh (discus), the 4x100 relay team of Colin Nickerson, Marcus Velez, Tyler Velazquez and McIntosh and the 4x400 team of Tucker Doyle, Jacob Rose, Rishi Iyer and Velazquez. Old Lyme's Kyle Myers was third in the high jump.

    Road racing

    • Brandy LeClair of Groton won the Great Strides for Great Neck 5K in Waterford, finishing with a time of 18:46. Michael Person of Waterford was the top male finisher, coming in second in 19:19. Also finishing in the top 10 were Emily Miller of Waterford (20:25), Brad Watkins of Woodbury (20:51), Jim Wolfley of Waterford (22:33), Mike Lally of Waterford (24:07), Michael Adams (24:18), Sean Maginess of Oakdale (24:22), Jonathan Norton of Waterford (24:40) and Kyle Palmer of Waterford (24:54). 

    • Mario Costa of Pawcatuck won the Run to Recovery 5K on Saturday in Waterford, finishing in 18:49. Emma Rincon of Essex was the top women's finisher, coming in fifth in 20:34. Also finishing in the top 10 were Benjamin Syphrett of Gales Ferry (19:23), Matt Forde of Mystic (19:33), Matt Pulse of Colchester (20:34), Dave Crowley of Uncasville (20:45), Jim Tiernan of Pawcatuck (20:55), Ian Kamperschroer of Ledyard (21:12), Colby Cowan of Oakdale (21:13) and Dylan Sullivan of Waterford (21:16).
