    Local roundup: O'Leary leads Fitch past Morgan

    Waterford — Maggie O'Leary scored five goals and had two assists as Fitch beat Morgan 17-13 in a nonleague girls' lacrosse match played at Waterford High School on Sunday.

    Rita Sefransky had three goals and three assists, Bridget O'Leary had four goals and an assist, Zoe Pearse had a goal and three assists, Jessica Russo had a goal and an assist and Nora Casey and Caroline Podurgiel had a goal each for Fitch (5-2).

    College baseball

    • Mitchell College wrapped up its New England Collegiate Conference regular season by sweeping Elms 12-4 and 3-0. The Mariners (31-6, 15-1) have won 17 straight games and will be the No. 1 seed in the NECC tournament. Jakari Pellegrini pitched 5.2 innings for the win in the opener and Brian Ricker pitched six shutout innings of three-hit ball in Game 2. Dougie DelaCruz of Uncasville was 4-5 on the day and scored three runs and Steve Cochrane was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored in the opener for Mitchell.

    • Hunter Hearn's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Sam Houston State a 6-5 win over UConn in a nonleague game. John Toppa, Kyle Fedko, David Langer and Anthony Nucerino had two hits each for the Huskies (26-18). 

    College softball

    • Suzanne Vachon of Mitchell College was 8-for-9 but the Mariners were swept by Newbury College in an NECC doubleheader, losing the opener 8-6 and the second game 14-10. Kaitlin Thibodeau-Corey had five hits, Sydney Oatley and Madison Nicynski (five RBI) had four hits each and Vachon scored four runs and drove in three for Mitchell (11-22, 4-12).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Southern Vermont led 10-2 at halftime and held on to beat Mitchell College 14-11 in a NECC game. Kate McCormack scored six goals, Francesca Pinard had two goals and two assists and Hannah Corrigan had a goal and an assist for Mitchell (2-10, 2-4).

    Women's tennis

    • Connecticut College closed out its season with an 8-1 loss to Colby in a New England Small College Athletic Conference match. Paige Braithwaite won at No. 6 singles for Conn (8-11, 0-8).

    Men's tennis

    • Conn College's season ended with a 7-2 loss to colby in a NESCAC match. Guillermo Garcia Rincon won at No. 2 singles and teamed with Will Cannon at No. 1 doubles for Conn (8-9, 2-6). on Saturday, Walter Komishane rallied for a 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 win over Jafar Sharipov in the No. 6 singles match and gave the Camels a 5-4 win over Hamilton. SangJin Song, Guillermo Garcia and Henry DeCoster also won their singles matches for Conn.  

    Women’s track and field

    • Koko Mensah and Emily Senatore each won an event as Conn College placed seventh at Saturday's NESCAC Championships. Williams won its sixth straight title with 165 points and Conn scored 48. Mensah won the shot put (44-feet, 11.75 inches). Senatore broke her own school record to win the discus (142-3) and Mensah was second (126-8). Shannon Kennedy finished third in the long jump (17-1.25) to join Mensah and Senatore on the All-NESCAC team.

    Men’s track and field

    • Danny Aschale was runner-up in the 10,000 (31:23.94) as Conn College finished 10th at Saturday's NESCAC Championships. Middlebury won nine events to win with 201 points while Conn scored 16.

    Girls’ tennis

    • Samantha Cote, Sneha Kumar and Kavita Srirangan won the top three singles matches, respectively, as Fitch beat NFA on Saturday, 6-1. Fitch is 9-1. Kaitlin Cavanaugh won at number four singles for the Wildcats (3-4).

    Road racing

    • Daniel Spangler of San Diego won the Niantic Bay Boardwalk 5K with a time of 18:22 while Kayla Job of Quaker Hill was the top female finisher, coming in 12th at 20:40. Also finishing in the top 10 were Chris Mucifield of Niantic (18:53), Krystian Pawlowski of Glastonbury (19:03), Brendan Tierney of Niantic (19:40), Nathaniel Pelletier of Summerville, S.C. (19:54), Trevor Christensen of East Lyme (19:57), Kevin MacDonald of Norwich (19:57), Brian Pawlowski of Glastonbury (20:02), Eric Garofan of Mystic (20:05) and Tom Provencher of East Lyme (20:18).
