    Local roundup: Stonington hires pair of alumni as head coaches

    Stonington — Stonington High School is turning two a pair of alumni to lead its cross country and boys' basketball programs.

    Athletic director Bryan Morrone announced Friday that Jeff Parkinson will coach the boys' and girls' cross country programs this fall and another alum, Jay Wosencroft, will take over as boys' basketball coach in the winter.

    Parkinson replaces Jenna Ross, who guided the cross country programs for 10 seasons while Wosencroft takes over John Luzzi, who resigned after five seasons to move to Florida.

    "I am very excited for next year," Morrone said in a release. "I know Jeff and Jay will continue to push our athletes to excel in competition and better themselves as young adults in the Stonington community.

    "I personally love to see alumni on our sidelines leading the new generations of Bears."

    Parkinson has already worked with most of the returning cross country athletes. He has been Stonington's head coach in indoor and outdoor track and field for the last six seasons.

    "This will assure a consistency for our distance runners through the three seasons, which will be a great benefit for our student-athletes," Morrone said. "Additionally, his knowledge of training and his competitive drive will help to maintain the great tradition of success for Stonington cross country."

    Wosencroft has been a Stonington assistant for several seasons the formally served as the middle school head coach.

    "I believe Jay will continue the great momentum the boys' team had this past season," said Morrone (the Bears finished second in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II tournament and reached CIAC Division IV quarterfinals). "He is a hard-working coach whose passion for Stonington basketball is unsurpassed. Jay already has a great rapport with our players and his instruction and knowledge of game has grown each year."

    Girls' track and field

    • Norwich Free Academy junior Paige Martin cleared 12 feet, one-half inch, a personal best, to tie for fifth in the Emerging Elite pole vault competition at the New Balance National high school championships in Greensboro, N.C.

    American Legion Zone 6

    • Daniel Eggler's bases-clearing double in the bottom of the seventh gave Norwich a 6-5 walk-off win over Willimantic in its Zone 6 season opener at Dickenman Field. Eggler finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and Kevin Pomroy was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Ethan Grabill got the win in relief of Anthony Ladouceur, who struck out seven over five innings.

    College honors

    • Coast Guard Academy has finished 74th nationally in the 2018-19 Division III Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup final standings. The Bears have earned a spot in the top 100 for the first time since 2006-07 when they finished 84th overall.

    To earn points in the Learfield Directors' Cup a maximum of 18 sports are counted. Men's and women's basketball and women's and women's soccer are the four sports that must be counted for each institution. Additionally, up to 14 other scores may be counted, regardless of gender, in the final score.

    Coast Guard finished in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings with a total of 266.25 points. After not earning any points in the fall, the Bears tallied 229.75 points in the winter with a program-best, 47th spot in the winter rankings.

    Women's indoor track and field brought in the most points (67.5) as the Bears sent four female athletes to the Division III National Championships, including national champion Kaitlyn Mooney in the 5,000-meter race. Men's swimming added 62.3 points as they sent seven male swimmers to the NCAA Division III Championships.

    Two other New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference schools finished in the top 100 — MIT (sixth) and Springfield (38th).

    Schooners lose first game

    • The Ocean State Wave handed the Mystic Schooners their first loss of the NECBL season, breaking a 2-2 tie with a six-run fifth inning and beating the Schooners 10-3 on Thursday night. David Beam (East Tennessee State) went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Mystic (6-1) while TT Bowens (Central Connecticut) went 1-for-3 and scored two runs.
