Local colleges: Conn's Cronin, CGA's Mooney earn cross country All-America honors

Louisville, Ky. — Connecticut College's Meredith Cronin and Coast Guard Academy's Kaitlyn Mooney earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III women's cross country championship on Saturday at Sawyer State Park.

Cronin, a junior, became an All-American for the first time by placing 33rd overall in 22:07.7 over the 6K course while Mooney, also a junior became an All-American for the eighth time in her career by placing just behind Cronin in 34th place in 22:08.3.

Mooney, who missed most of the season with an injury before returning for last week's New England Division III meet, became the first three-time All-American in program history (she is a five-time All-American in track). Mooney finished fourth as a freshman and sophomore.

"Kaitlyn's performance (Saturday) was nothing less than remarkable," head coach Ethan Brown said in a release. "After getting injured in the middle of September, she put in a tremendous amount of work so that she could run at regionals and then the NCAA's today. We are really proud of Kait for overcoming great odds to be CGA's first three-time cross country All-American."

Cronin, meanwhile, became Conn's first All-American since Maura Danahy, who earned that honor three consecutive seasons from 1999-2001.
