    Local roundup: CGA women capture Hockenbury Classic tournament

    Northfield, Vt. — Annabella Farabaugh scored 16 points as Coast Guard Academy captured the Ed Hockenbury Classic women's basketball tournament with a 59-53 win over Wellesley in Saturday's final at Norwich University.

    Jacqueline Ward added 15 points for the Bears (7-2), who are off to their best start since beginning the 2013-14 season 8-1, while Breanna Wood had a season-best 11 rebounds.

    Caitlin Aguire scored 25 points for Wellesley (6-2).

    In other games:

    • Amina Wiley had 20 points and a school record 32 rebounds as Mitchell College defeated Anna Maria 56-44 for its third straight win. The 32 rebounds are the most in any NCAA game this season (Division I, II or III). Leilani McClellan added a season-high 16 points for the Mariners (4-3) while Le'Sandra Turner finished with 10.

    • Massasoit Community College, ranked third in NJCAA Division III, beat No. 10 Avery Point 86-40. Former Waterford standout Rebekah Sanders had 12 points and 21 rebounds, Old Lyme's Abby Stone scored 11 points and had eight rebounds and Julitza Delgado had nine points and five assists for the Pointers (6-2). 

    • Springfield College rolled to a 61-46 nonleague win over Connecticut College. Jenna Whelan had a career-high 15 points to lead the Camels (3-5) while Sami Ashton added 13 and Claire Gulbin finished with seven points, six rebounds and two steals.

    Men's basketball

    • Mitchell lost to Johnson & Wales 94-89 in a nonleague game. Matt Finke led Mitchell (1-6) with 21 points and teammates Jalen Benson of New London (19), Hasani Williams (12) and Brendan Miller (10) also scored in double figures.

    • Tyler Zegray had 25 points and five assists to lead UConn Avery Point to an 84-56 win over Massasoit. Cyrus Sprague added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Pointers (5-6) while Waterford's Trevor Yeomans scored 13 points and Mitchell Holdmeyer had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard had five individual champions, including Montville's Noah Caskey at 141 pounds, as the Bears won their third straight Ted Reese Invitational at Southern Maine. Coast Guard, ranked No. 14 nationally and No. 2 in New England, finished with 186 points with Castleton second with 149.5.

    Caskey, Nick Moreno (165), Paul Detwiler (184), Jeremy Berson (194) and Patrick Irwin (heavyweight) won titles for the Bears. Caskey went 5-0 with a pair of pins to claim his first collegiate title. Matt McGowan (157), Phil Rogers (165), AJ Aeberli (174) and John Wagner (197) added seconds for CGA while AJ Pagliarulo (149) placed third, Kane Robert (197) finished fourth, Liam Logue (133), George McBurney (197) and Thomas Sidener (heavyweight) each placed fifth and Brock Laggini (125) was sixth.

    Coast Guard hosts Johnson & Wales, ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 6 nationally, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

    H.S. football

    • Valley/Old Lyme had six players named to the 2019 All-Pequot Conference team. The Warriors had three selected on offense — Wes Belisle (lineman), Brian Funk (placekicker) and Brian Rankin (flex) — and three on defense — DiAngelo Jean-Pierre (back), Ben Conrad (line) and Colby Andrews (utility).

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Williams School finished third at the Mariner Classic, losing to host Rocky Hill (R.I.) 41-9 before beating Middlebridge 35-30 in the consolation game. Williams scored the final four points to close out Middlebridge. Mary Surprenant of Williams scored 19 points in the consolation and was selected to the all-tournament team.

    Women's hockey

    • Erin Dillon had two goals and two assists as Conn College beat William Smith 7-0. Melanie Conca and Sammi Estes had two goals each, Natalie Witkowski had a goal and Kylie Wilkes had two assists for the Camels (6-3). 

    Men's hockey

    • Conn College rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Colby 3-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Colin Stevens broke a 2-2 tie with his goal 7:56 into the third period. Chris Adamsons and Ryan Petti had goals and Anthony Quatieri had two assists for Conn (3-5, 2-4).

    • Jonny Evans scored three goals as UConn beat Vermont 7-4 in Hockey East. Carter Turnbull, Marc Gatcomb, Brian Rigali and Carter Berger also had goals and Jachym Kondelik and Jake Flynn had two assists each for UConn (7-6-3, 4-4-2).

    Men's indoor track

    • Conn College's Billy Fleurima set a school record in the 60-meter dash during the Camels' season opener on Friday night at Wesleyan. Fleurima finished second overall in 7.15 seconds, breaking the old mark of 7.21 set by teammate Ian McAleer at the Tufts Cupid Challenge on Feb. 2. Fleurima also finished second in the 200 in 23.85.

    Women's indoor track

    • Conn College's Koko Mensah and Kate Howe were individual winners during the season opener at Wesleyan on Friday night. Mensah won the shot put (42 feet, 6 inches) and qualified for the New England Division III and All-New England meets while Howe captured the long jump (15-11.5).
