    Local roundup: CGA's Rodriguez qualifies for U.S. Olympic swimming trials

    Annapolis, Md. — Coast Guard Academy senior Joe Rodriguez became the first swimmer in program history to qualify for the United States Olympic trials with his performance at the Navy Long Course Invitational on Friday.

    Rodriguez, competing in the 50-meter freestyle, qualified for the Olympic trials with a time of 23.14 seconds in the morning preliminaries (the Olympic cut time is 23.19), then came back and bettered that time by posting a 23.07 to win the finals Friday night.

    The U.S. Olympic trials will begin on June 27, 2020 in Omaha, Neb.

    Men's basketball

    • Anna Maria rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Mitchell College 87-83 in overtime. New London's Jalen Benson led the Mariners (2-7) with a career-high 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting while Matt Finke finished with 15 and Marvin Baker came off the bench to added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

    • Keigo Kimura led a balanced attack with 16 points as St. Thomas More rolled to a 91-44 home victory over Aim High Academy. Sean Macarchuk added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Chancellors while Jai Smith had 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, Charles Williams scored 13 points and Chris Manon had 12.

    H.S. riflery

    • Grasso Tech opened its season with an 864-801 victory over Wilcox Tech on Thursday at the Quaker Hill Rod & Gun Club. Alex Potochniak fired a 185 out of 200 to lead the Eagles while Thomas Riffe added a 181, Adam Riffe a 169, Rick Dun a 166 and Robert Holland a 163. Potochniak and Holland each had a perfect score in the prone position.
