    Local roundup: St. Bernard boys top Ledyard by a point

    Ledyard — Freshman Tyson Wheeler scored 24 points to lead St. Bernard to a 74-73 win over Ledyard in a high school boys' basketball game Wednesday night.

    Cedrick Similien, also a freshman, had 15 points for the Saints (6-5) while teammates Frank Pacheco (13), Nathaniel Avery (12) and Walker Baillargeon (10) also scored in double figures. Jabari Jones had 28 points and 13 rebounds and Dorell Cagle scored 18 for Ledyard (5-5).

    In other games: 

    • Grasso Tech had four players score in double figures in a 61-52 win over Civic Leadership. Donnell Brown led the way with 15 points, Ethan McAvoy scored 14, Tyrell Dennis scored 12 and Domonick Martinez had 10 points for Grasso.

    • Dorian White, Ayden Morrison and Nate Cyr scored 14 points each to lead Stonington past Griswold 71-34. The Bears (6-6) led Griswold 18-5 after one quarter.

    Men's basketball

    • Noah Baldez tied a career high with 25 points, becoming the 20th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark, as Coast Guard beat Clark 103-77 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Packy Witkowski came off the bench to score 21 for Coast Guard (6-9, 1-4) and teammates Justin Kane (13), Madison Maloney (11) and J.T. Cox (10) also scored in double figures for the Bears.

    • Chris Manon had 20 points, six rebounds and four assists to power St. Thomas More past Mount Hermon 69-60. Zeke Blauner had 14 points and Jared Garcia added 13 while Justin Hemphill chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Chancellors (21-1).

    • New London's Jalen Benson scored 18 points and had five assists as Mitchell College beat Lesley 104-59 in an NECC game. Matt Finke had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists, Dra Harrison scored 17 and Alfonzo Stokes had 11 points for Mitchell (6-11, 3-1). 

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • No. 9 NFA led 22-3 after one quarter and went on to beat RHAM 48-29 in a nonleague game. Jada Mills had 19 points and Bella Graziano scored eight for NFA (9-2).

    • Sophie Byrne scored 15 points and Samarie Delgado added 10 in Grasso Tech's 37-36 loss to Civic Leadership.

    • Williams School lost to Chase Collegiate 61-26. Anna Mae Saunders had 16 points and Olivia Kaplan scored eight for Williams (1-6).

    Women's basketball

    • Sami Ashton had 23 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals as Connecticut College beat Westfield State 89-70 in a nonleague game. Ashley Howe scored 17 points and Casey Walsh had eight rebounds for Conn (6-10).

    • Wellesley ended the game with a 19-3 run, pulling away for a 59-35 win over Coast Guard in a NEWMAC game. Annabella Farabaugh led Coast Guard (11-6, 0-2) with eight points.  

    H.S. wrestling

    • Ledyard beat Griswold 70-12. Connor Doran (113 pounds), Caden Foote (145) and Mason Barnett (152) had pins for Ledyard (11-4) and teammate Jacob Foster (132) also won his match.

    • NFA lost to Windham 34-32. Dominic Renfree (132), Mason McMahon (182) and Christian Gervais (912) had pins for NFA (8-7) and teammates Jaiden James (106), Connor DeVega (126), Theran Vanase (170) and Ruben Britos (220) also won matches.

    H.S. fencing

    • Led by Alex Potochniak's 189, Grasso Tech remained unbeaten with a 867-793 win over Wilcox Tech. Also scoring for Grasso (3-0) were Adam Riffe (176), Juliana Walker (170), Rick Dunn (166) and Alex Gauthier (166), who had a perfect score in prone. 

    H.S. boys’ indoor track

    • Stonington’s Chase Flynn won the 600 (1:26.67) at the SCC Coaches Invitational on Tuesday night. The Bears’ Ryan Gruczka was third in the 1,600 (4:37.32).
