    Local roundup: No. 9 CGA wrestlers end long drought vs. Johnson & Wales

    Providence — Tony Ulaszek (149 pounds) recorded the only pin of the match, his ninth in ten matches this season, as No. 9 Coast Guard Academy defeated No. 14 Johnson & Wales 24-14 in a collegiate wrestling dual meet on Friday night.

    It was the Bears' victory over the Wildcats in 20 years. Johnson & Wales had beaten CGA 24 straight times, Coast Guard's last win coming in 2001 (25-18).

    Ulaszek's pin gave Coast Guard a 18-14 lead before Joe Chapman (157) clinched the victory with a 4-3 win Steve Rochard (165) followed with an 11-6 win in the final match of the night.

    Coast Guard's other wins came from Brock Laggini (125), who won by technical fall (18-0, 6:39), Paul Detwiler (184), who won by major decision (20-7) and Coy Spooner (197), who won 7-0.

    Men's basketball

    • Noah Williamson had 18 points and 10 rebounds as St. Thomas More outlasted Woodstock Academy Gold 82-79. Kyle Carlesimo added 16 points for the Chancellors (7-2) while Achile Spadone finished with 10 points and six assists. Jalen Bradbury scored 24 points, including seven 3-pointers, for Woodstock (7-4).

    • Avery Point lost to CCRI 95-48 in an NJCAA Region 21 game on Thursday. Davon Benjamin of New London had 14 points, four assists and three steals and Zach Mihok had 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks for Avery Point (0-7, 0-5). CCRI (8-1, 6-0) in ranked eighth nationally.

    Women's hockey

    • Host Castleton defeated Conn College 2-1 in a shootout to advance to the championship round of the Spartan Invitational in Rutland, Vt. The teams played to a 3-3 tie in regular and overtime but used the shootout to decide which team would advance to the final.

    Conn (2-4-2), which overcame a 3-1 deficit to force overtime, will play the loser of Friday's second game between Colby and Potsdam State in Saturday's consolation at 1 p.m.

    Natalie Witkowski scored twice for the Camels, including the tying goal in the third period, while Melanie Conca added a goal and Melissa Alexander had two assists and goalie Carly Denora made 16 saves.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Christian Heritage defeated Williams School 49-18 in a NEPSAC game. The Blues (0-2, 0-1) were led by Ally Iacobellis with seven points and Marlee Anselmi with six.

    Women's basketball

    • Le'Sandra Turner had 15 points, eight rebounds and five steals as Mitchell beat Lesley 65-47 on Thursday night. Yasmine Santos and Alexia Watson each scored 11, Tianna Sweeney had nine rebounds and Jermia Dumas came off the bench for seven rebounds for Mitchell (5-4).

    • Avery Point lost to CCRI 90-66 in an NJCAA Region 21 game on Thursday. CCRI (9-1, 6-0) is ranked 10th nationally. Adeline Smith of Niantic scored 25 points, Trinity Angel had 14 points and 16 rebounds and Francesca Foster of Mystic had nine points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for the Pointers (4-7, 3-1).
