    Local roundup: Beagle leads St. Thomas More past Winchendon

    Montville — The St. Thomas More basketball team beat Winchendon 79-51 in the New England Basketball League Showcase on Sunday.

    John Beagle had 13 points and 10 rebounds for T-More. In Sunday's other games Cushing Academy beat Vermont Academy 83-56 and Putnam Science beat Northfield Mount Hermon 71-58. 

    • Avery Point's season came to an end with a 67-48 loss to Quinsigamond Community College in a Region XXI game. Former NFA standout Nolan Molkenthin had 11 points and nine rebounds, Waterford's Trevor D'Amico had eight points and nine rebounds and Zach Mihok and CJ Mattson of Griswold each scored 11 for the Pointers (6-14, 6-12).

    College baseball

    • Mitchell College lost to William Pearce 8-6. John-John Jose and Hunter Yaworski had two hits each for Mitchell (1-2).

    • Enzo Stefanoni pitched 6.2 strong innings as UConn beat Louisville 9-2. Stefanoni allowed seven hits and no runs with eight strikeouts and no walks. Zach Bushling was 4-for-5 with a homer, Matt Donlan homered and drove in three runs and former Stonington standout Kevin Ferrer was 3-for-3 with a double.

    College softball

    • UConn lost to James Madison 11-5 in Charlotte, N.C. Erika Coreth homered and drove in three runs and Jana Sanden homered and drove in two runs for UConn (3-6).  

    Men's lacrosse

    • Mitchell College opened its season with a 26-2 loss to Farmingdale State. Dominick Reposa and John Porcelli scored for the Mariners.

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard's Tyler Bland broke the NEWMAC championship and pool record and won the 100 breaststroke championship with a time of 54.73 on Saturday in the NEWMAC meet at MIT.

    Also for the Bears, Derek Ledford earned All-conference honors with a second place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.69. He broke the school record with a time of 48.41 in the morning preliminaries. The 200 medley relay of Connor Shenk, Bland, Ledford, Bobby O'Donnell placed second (1:30.91) to earn All-conference honors. Colin Twiss broke the school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.07 to place third.

    Women's swimming

    • Both of Coast Guard's 200 medley relays broke schools records in consecutive races on Saturday in the NEWMAC meet at MIT. The team of Lucy Smutny, Tailyn Schaufelberger, Grace Keogh and Rylie Brick set the record with a time of 1:48.45 to place 13th. Isabel Robey, Ellie Hiestand, Ashley Fuller and Rylie Brick then broke that record with a time of 1:47.24 to place fourth. 

    H.S. fencing

    • Fitch clinched the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I title boys' epee title on Saturday with wins over East Lyme (7-2) and Fitch (5-4). East Lyme beat Waterford 5-4 and also picked up wins in foil over Fitch (7-2) and Waterford (6-3) while Waterford beat Fitch 6-3.

    The Waterford girls' team went 4-0, beating Fitch 7-2 and East Lyme 6-2 in epee and Fitch 8-1 and East Lyme 6-3 in foil. East Lyme beat Fitch 6-3 in epee and Fitch beat East Lyme 7-2 in foil.

    Men's hockey

    • Ryan Tverberg was involved in all four goals as No. 20 UConn beat No. 10 UMass 4-2 in a Hockey East game on Saturday night. Tverberg had a goal and three assists, Jachym Kondelik had two assists and Darion Hanson made 35 saves for the Huskies (17-12, 13-7).
