    Local roundup: Schooners get a doubleheader split

    Norwich — The Mystic Schooners split a New England Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader, beating the Newport Gulls 2-1 in the first game on Sunday before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.

    After seven scoreless innings, the first game went to extras and Newport took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the eighth. Mystic (7-8) tied the game when Tucker Flint (UNC Greensboro) scored from third on a dropped third strike. Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac) singled home Joseph Jaconski (North Carolina) to win the game.

    The Ocean State Waves beat the Schooners 6-2 on Saturday night. Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac) had an RBI single and a solo homer and Pawcatuck's Kevin Ferrer (UConn) had two hits for the Schooners.

    In the second game Addison Kopack (Rhode Island), Jaconski and Ferrer had two hits each. Waterford's Jared Burrows (Bryant) took the loss, allowing five hits and three runs over two innings. 

    FCBL

    • The Norwich Sea Unicorns lost to the Nashua Silver Knights 5-2 in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game. Bo Yaworski (Mitchell College) tripled three times and scored a run and Alex Irizarry (Maryland) singled and doubled for Norwich (13-15). Lisbon's Griffin Pontbriant (Eastern Connecticut State) took the loss, allowing two earned runs over four innings. 

    The Sea Unicorns beat the Worcester Bravehearts 10-0 on Saturday night. CJ Willis (Western New England) was 3-for-5 with a double, Sean Swenson (Quinnipiac) was 2-for-5 with a homer and Jackson Ferrigno (UConn) tripled and drove in two runs for Norwich.

    Zone 6 Legion

    • Mason Bordeau scored four runs and Jacob Savage drove in three as Norwich beat Jewett City 17-4. Chris Southworth singled, tripled and scored two runs and Elliott Johnson, Jason Wedge, Sawyer Hendrick and Ryan Trudeau drove in two runs each for Norwich (7-3). William Clapper, Daniel Hess and Aaron Hamel had two hits each for Jewett City (0-11).

    • The Clippers won their fifth straight game, beating the Padres 5-2 in the Eastern Connecticut Major League. Mike Evans had a two-run single for the Clippers, who scored four unearned runs. Andrew Fogarty doubled and drove in two runs for the Padres.

    District 10 softball (10-12)

    • Gabrielle Fontaine pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Waterford beat Groton/Mystic 13-3. Brooklyn Hume and Fontaine each had three hits and Mia Majeski, Gianna Duzant, Isabella Rush, Evie Bellos and Aubrie Willis had two hits each for Waterford. Kayla Gibson had a hit for Groton/Mystic.

    • Natalie Lutyen and Abby Daniewicz combined on a two-hitter as Salem/Montville beat Stonington 12-2. Daniewicz had three hits and Sofia Gibson, Mia Lloyd and Jainna Lesniewski had two hits each for Salem/Montville. Shelby Mayo and Molly Perkins had hits for Stonington.

    District 10 baseball (9-11)

    • Four pitchers combined to pitch a no-hitter as Waterford beat Ledyard 12-0 on Saturday. Christian O'Connor, Cam Dlubac, Reilly Karasevicz and Tyler Stack combined on the no-hitter. Griff Fiano had two hits and scored twice, O'Connor drove in two runs and Karasevicz scored three runs for Waterford. Nick Fermo and Riley French drew walks for Ledyard.
