Mechanical problem forces Mystic YMCA to alter project schedule

Mystic — The Mystic branch of the Ocean Community YMCA has moved up its plans to close its pool and locker rooms as part of the facility’s $7.2 million renovation and expansion after a failure in the pool’s mechanical room forced the shutdown of the entire building last weekend.

Construction plans had called for the pool and locker rooms to be closed for renovations in mid-April but YMCA President and CEO Maureen Fitzgerald said Wednesday the decision was made to do that now. The renovated pool and larger locker rooms are slated to reopen June 15.

Fitzgerald said that last Friday, a failure with the pool’s pump allowed water into the mechanical room and forced the shutdown of the building’s electrical system. She said electricity and heating but not hot water was restored by Sunday, when the YMCA reopened.

She said a trailer with bathrooms and sinks will open adjacent to the building on Thursday. The YMCA’s wellness center, classes and child care will continue to be available to members as work progresses.

When the pool reopens on June 15, Fitzgerald said it will contain all new mechanical and pump systems. The new expanded locker rooms also will be open. A family locker room, something that does not exist now, will open at a later date.

While the recent bad weather has hampered construction crews, Fitzgerald said the project is on track for completion in September, with the gym renovation to be completed the following month. When the project is done, it will be renamed the Naik Family YMCA, in honor of the Mystic family that donated $1 million toward the project.

Fitzgerald said steel beams have arrived on the site and will begin to be erected next week, if there are no further weather delays.

The YMCA has raised all but $100,000 it needs for the project. Information about the project and donating is available at bit.ly/MYMCAcampaign.
