Porter and Chester Institute to open campus in New London

New London — Porter and Chester Institute, which offers career training for high-school students, adult learners and military veterans, announced on Friday that it is opening a campus in New London.

It will operate at 470 Bank St. This is the site of the former Ridley-Lowell Business & Technical Institute, which closed suddenly in April amid "financial and operational challenges."

Ridley-Lowell offered dental, medical, electrical and beauty programs. The new Porter and Chester facility will offer training in the fields of dental assisting, medical assisting and electrical work, with training that can be completed in nine to 12 months.

"Porter and Chester's great reputation and expertise in preparing folks for work in the trades will be a great asset not only for city but for businesses in our area in need of a skilled workforce," Mayor Michael Passero said in a news release.

The campus intends to accept applications for the fall term, which starts Oct. 22.

This will be the sixth Porter and Chester campus in Connecticut, adding to ones in Branford, Enfield, Rocky Hill, Stratford and Waterbury. In Massachusetts, there are Porter and Chester campuses in Canton, Chicopee and Worcester.

Other campuses offer automotive, CADD, computers, electronics, HVACR, cosmetology, medical billing and coding, and practical nursing programs.

Porter and Chester was founded as the Porter School of Engineering Design in 1946 and merged with the Chester Institute for Technical Education in 1973.
