Chelsea Groton Foundation pledges $100,000 to Coast Guard museum project

New London — The Chelsea Groton Foundation is pledging $100,000 to the National Coast Guard Museum project, bringing total fundraising to $38 million, including federal, state and private money.

The National Coast Guard Museum Association, the fundraising arm for the museum, and officials from the bank foundation announced the donation at a brief event Tuesday at Union Station, which is adjacent to the future site of the museum.

The gift is among the largest the foundation has given in its history. Other recipients of $100,000 grants were Lawrence + Memorial Cancer Center and Global City Norwich.

The project has received $13 million from private donors, $1.3 million of which came from Connecticut donors. The project also has received $20 million in state funding, and $5 million in federal funding. The museum association is seeking $30 million from the federal government.

An early estimate put the cost to build the museum at $100 million. An updated cost estimate isn't expected until the design of the museum is finalized, with construction tentatively scheduled to begin in 2021, although that could change.
