New London — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., is scheduled to announce Monday morning at 11 a.m. at Union Station that legislation will be introduced in Congress to ensure Coast Guard personnel are paid during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Because the Coast Guard is part of the Department of Homeland Security and not the Department of Defense as the other military branches are, it is the only service not guaranteed pay during the shutdown.

“Only the Coast Guard, among all military services, goes unpaid during the shutdown—that is unfair and unacceptable. Encouraged by Coast Guard Commandant Karl Shultz, I will work to pass legislation right after the new Congress convenes to right this wrong. The Trump Shutdown callously disregards the serious sacrifices made across America. Bipartisan leadership is needed to restore rational governing abandoned by an impetuous, petulant President,” Blumenthal said Sunday.
