‘Little Pink House’ screens in region this week

The fact that “Little Pink House,” the movie based on the book of the same name by Jeff Benedict, will be shown at Niantic Cinemas has a neat little familial twist.

Waterford native Benedict told his mother, Cindi Benedict, who now lives in Michigan, about the plan for the screenings at the Niantic theater. And, well, it turns out that she worked there as a teenager in the mid-1960s. She even still has some of her paystubs, which she keeps in her journal. Jeff Benedict’s mother told him that it is surreal to think that, when she was a teen, she worked at the Niantic venue and now her son has a movie playing there.

Cindi Benedict, who is now 72, won’t be able to make it out to Connecticut for the “Little Pink House” run at Niantic Cinemas, but the movie is sure to draw local viewers interested in seeing a story that unfolded right here in southeastern Connecticut.

“Little Pink House” focuses on Susette Kelo’s battle against eminent domain in an effort to keep her house in the Fort Trumbull section of New London. The fight went to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2005. The movie stars Catherine Keener as Kelo. Keener’s credits include “Get Out,” “Being John Malkovich,” “Capote” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” Courtney Balaker directed and wrote the screenplay, based on Benedict’s book.

“Little Pink House” is featured at Niantic Cinemas from Friday through May 10.

Mystic Luxury Cinemas is screening the movie during that time as well.

The film is also returning for an encore showing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Garde Arts Center, where it played to a sold-out crowd on April 15.
