Film series kicks off at the Garde

The Oscars are March 10, so here’s a way to brush up on potential Academy Award nominees: go to the 2024 Breezeline Winter Cinema Series at the Garde Arts Center.

Nominations will be announced Jan. 23, and you can bet most, if not all, of the Cinema Series entries will have a spot in some category.

The series starts off Bradley Cooper’s creatively designed biopic of conductor/composter Leonard Bernstein, on Jan. 19. Opening remarks will come courtesy of Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra’s own maestro, Toshiyuki Shimada, who was a student of Bernstein’s.

Paul Giamatti plays a dyspeptic boarding school teacher who gets stuck chaperoning students during the Christmas holidays in “The Holdovers,” which is by turns funny and touching; the Garde screens that on Jan. 20.

Leonardo DiCaprio and (fingers crossed!) upcoming Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone co-star in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” about the murder of Osage tribal members after oil is discovered on their land in the 1920s, on Jan. 20 at the Garde.

The fabulous adaptation of Judy Blume’s iconic “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret” plays the Garde in a Jan. 21 matinee. Joining the screening is Groton’s own Kate MacCluggage, who plays Margaret’s friend’s mom in the film. She’ll speak after the movie.

Oh, and “Barbie” swoops in on Feb. 2.

See the schedule below. New films are added often, so check gardearts.org for updates. A series pass is $65. Individual screenings are $15. The Garde is at 325 State St., New London.
