Goodspeed presents “Guys and Dolls”
Goodspeed is turning its storied musical-revival attention to one of the classics: “Guys and Dolls.”
The production that opens the Goodspeed Opera House season has it all: a sassy story, based on Damon Runyon’s work and written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, and an irrepressible score by Frank Loesser. And, of course, a cast populated by plenty of Broadway-tested actors.
Directing it all is Don Stephenson, whose credits include productions at the Paper Mill Playhouse and Lincoln Center Avery Fisher Hall. He also happens to be the son-in-law of the legendary Loesser.
A quick rundown on the storyline: An inveterate gambler takes a romantic wager. He accepts his friend’s bet to try to get the next female he sees to fall for him. Said female ends up being a virtuous Salvation Army gal.
Which leads to a lot of singing and dancing and comedy. On the song side are “Luck Be a Lady Tonight,” “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat” and “A Bushel and a Peck,” among others.
“Guys and Dolls” has been hugely popular ever since its 1950 debut on Broadway. The material has attracted a whole range of performers over the years — from Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra in the 1955 movie to Ewan McGregor in the 2005 West End revival.
