Goodspeed Musicals has had great success with its outdoor concerts and shows — the theater’s way of pivoting after the pandemic began.

Now, though, what Goodspeed fans have been waiting for is going to happen: audiences can go inside the iconic Opera House and see a show live onstage.

The show won’t be “South Pacific,” which Goodspeed had been planning as its production in 2020 and then for 2021. It will, though, still highlight the magnificent work of Rodgers and Hammerstein. It’s a revue titled “A Grand Night for Singing: A Celebration of Rodgers & Hammerstein, and it starts its run on Friday.

It boasts some numbers from “South Pacific” but also from the likes of “The Sound of Music,” “Carousel” and “The King and I.”

The revue was conceived by Walter Bobbie, who directed “Chicago” and “Footloose” on Broadway. Directing the production at Goodspeed is Rob Ruggiero; it’s his 12th season helming a show there.

As for COVID protocols, Goodspeed, like other theaters in the state, is taking no chances. People have to be fully vaccinated and show proof of vaccination when they enter the Opera House. Exemptions will be addressed in advance, and anyone with an approved exemption must provide proof of a negative COVID PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance start time. Masks are required at all times, except when drinking in the bar area or outside. And kids under 12 can’t attend Goodspeed shows as of now because they can’t get vaccinated.

“A Grand Night for Singing: A Celebration of Rodgers & Hammerstein,” opens Friday and runs through Nov. 28, Goodspeed Opera House, Main Street, East Haddam; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Wed., 7;30 p.m. Thurs., 8 p.m. Fri., 3 and 8 p.m. Sat. and 2 p.m. Sun.; also 2 p.m. shows on select Thursdays and 6:30 p.m. shows on select Sundays; tickets start at $29; (860) 873-8668, goodspeed.org.
