Eastern Connecticut baseball coach suspended for season

Willimantic (AP) — Longtime Eastern Connecticut State University baseball coach Bill Holowaty has been suspended with pay for the rest of the season on complaints that he cursed, threw a helmet into the bleachers during a game and failed to follow university officials' directives.

Holowaty has been Eastern's coach for the past 45 years and school officials tout him as the winningest coach in the history of New England intercollegiate athletics with more than 1,400 victories. He's led the Warriors to four Division III national titles and was named national Coach of the Year four times.

School officials on Monday suspended Holowaty until May 13 pending an investigation. Assistant coach Michael Grant will lead the team as acting head coach the rest of the season.

Holowaty has declined to comment on the suspension.
