    Local roundup: Bauml, Tigers thump Lake Monsters

    Norwich — Cole Bauml went 5-for-6, including three doubles, with four RBI and two runs as the Connecticut Tigers thumped the Vermont Lake Monsters on Monday, 13-4, in a New York-Penn League game played before 862 at Dodd Stadium.

    Bauml’s three-run double highlighted an eight-run, second inning for the Tigers (20-11).

    Austin Athmann had three hits, including a double, with two runs and two RBI for Connecticut and Cesar Gonzalez added two hits, including a double, with two runs and two RBI.

    Miguel Mercedes hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning for the Lake Monsters (14-17).

    NECBL

    • Nick Mascelli (Wagner) had two hits, two runs and an RBI and Groton’s Aaron Hill (UConn) had two hits, including a two-run double, as the Mystic Schooners smashed the Valley Blue Sox, 10-0. Richard Slenker (Yale) had a single, two RBI and a run for Mystic (19-12) and Alexander LeFevre (UConn) added a single, two RBI and a run. Also, Kyle Dube (Fairfield) gave up three hits over 4.1 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. The Blue Sox are 16-14.

    State Junior Legion

    • Vinny Gualtieri pitched a two-hitter as No. 7 Norwich advanced to the second round with a 4-3 win over No. 10 Bristol in the Northern Division of the state tournament. Norwich plays No. 2 Rocky Hill/Cromwell/Portland on Wednesday at Cromwell at 5 p.m. Gualtieri, who struck out seven, also hit a walkoff RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. 

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Peter Tauro pitched a complete game and drove in four runs with a double and triple as East Lyme Maroon beat East Lyme Black 17-5. John Keens had four hits and drove in four runs for Maroon (5-2). Andrew Brown had three hits and two RBI for Black (2-9).

    Montville names LaBranche as XC coach

    • Steven LaBranche was named the cross country coach at Montville High School, athletic director Phil Orbe announced. He will coach both the girls and boys.

    LaBranche, a 1992 Montville graduate, is a former All-State and All-New England distance runner in high school. He ran at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and is the former record holder in the 800, 1000 and 4x800 meters at the school. LaBranche, who also served in the United States Air Force from 1996-2000, was Montville's assistant cross country coach last season in addition to being an assistant in indoor track and girls' lacrosse.

    • Justin Thomas pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and had two RBI as Northeast Nine beat Three Rivers 8-2 in an Eastern Connecticut Major League game on Sunday. Will Warner was 3-for-4 and Causon Merchant Jr. singled and tripled for Northeast Nine (3-5). Tyler Wild homered for Three Rivers (5-4).

    Sutera tournament (11-12)

    • Mike Guillet scored twice as Lyme/Old Lyme beat Waterford 3-2. Aidan Powers and Avery Wyman combined for the win for Lyme/Old Lyme. Colby Arnold went the distance for Waterford.

    • Nathan Licitra pitched the shutout as East Lyme beat Pawcatuck 6-0. Harley Perreno drove in three runs for East Lyme. Brandt Ogden had two hits and Dorian White doubled for Pawcatuck.

    • C.J. Hamilton's homer in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and led New London to a 4-1 win over Montville. Kenny Miller was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts and also doubled. A.J. Benoit drove in Montville's run.

    Sutera tournament (9-10)

    • Derrel Mitchell doubled twice to lead New London to a 16-15 win over Waterford. Zachery Ruest had two hits and Jase DiBuono doubled for Waterford.

    • Liam Cochrane went the first five innings for the win as East Lyme beat Groton 11-1. Chris Cambi and A.J. Montejano had two hits each and Quinn Killoy doubled for East Lyme.

    • Jack Hayes pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts as East Lyme beat New London 5-2. Alex Dreyfus and Liam Cochrane had three hits each and Peter Sherwood doubled for East Lyme. Luca Muscarella had the only hit for New London.
