Local roundup: Ledyard boys rally past Fitch 3-2 in OT
Groton — Nick Washington's goal in the seventh minute of sudden death overtime completed a comeback that lifted Ledyard to a 3-2 boys' soccer win over Fitch on Monday, the Colonels' ninth straight win.
Washington's goal, his second of the game, came when he received a through-ball from Ian Kamperschroer, beat on last Fitch defender to the ball and slotted a shot into the side netting.
Ledyard (10-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit as Eric Leuchner scored twice for the Falcons (6-5-1), the second goal assisted by Sebastian Duffy. But Washington's first goal, assisted by Daimond Pollard, pulled the Colonels with 2-1 in the 62nd minute, and Eduardo Frias, assisted by Elliott Smith, tied the game less than a minute later.
Fitch held a 27-24 edge in shots with Ramiro Zavala making seven saves for the Falcons and Ken Turner 11 for the Colonels, including stopping a breakaway and then a point-break header in the first half.
The match was a "Purple Out" between the two programs to raise funds for Alzheimers research, and Ledyard coach Bill Glenney said more than $4,100 was raised and will be donated.
