    Local college notes

    Mariners riding a wave

Marc Davis, who spent the last four seasons as an assistant for the Mitchell College men's soccer program, has been hired as the new women's soccer coach. It is his first collegiate head coaching job.

"We are thrilled that Marc is taking over the women's soccer program," athletic director Dana Fulmer Garfield said in a release. "He brings a wealth of soccer experience at the international, club and collegiate levels, and over the past 10 years has built strong connections in the local soccer community.

"His leadership and coaching have played an important role in the recent success of our men's team, and I'm confident that he can bring our women's program to that same level."

Davis, who's originally from Southampton, England, coaches at the club level with the Southeast Soccer Club, working with several teams since 2008. He also served as an assistant for the Montville High School program from 2010-15.

A Waterford resident, Davis takes over a Mitchell women's program that went 1-14 in the fall and hasn't had a winning season since 2011.

"I am very excited about the chance to be the head women's soccer coach at Mitchell College," Davis said. "I believe in the importance of hard work and am fully committed to the development of both the person and the player. I look forward to using all my knowledge and experience in order to help this team succeed and accomplish its goals, both on and off the field."
