    Local roundup: Waterford boys win team title at Last Chance Invite indoor meet

    New Haven — Waterford High School's boys' indoor track and field team captured team honors during Saturday night's Bacon Academy Last Chance Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

    The Lancers finished with 60 points while Norwich Free Academy was second with 50.5 points and ledyard was third with 40. Local athletes won seven events, including a pair of Waterford individual winners as Christopher Smith won the 500 dash in 6.76 seconds and Sam Lenes won the 3,200 in 10:37.67.

    Other local boys' winners were New London's Marquis Whyte in the 600 (1:29.75), Stonington's Joey Hinckley in the 300 (36.97), NFA's Cameron Belton in the shot put (50-2.5), East Lyme's 4x800 relay (8:26.25) and Ledyard's 4x200 relay of James Smith, Travon Brown, Robbie Petriel and Jahmik Devone (1:34.25).

    Second-place finishes went to Waterford's Jared Lovell in the 55 hurdles (8.15), Ledyard's Smith in the 55 dash (6.77), East Lyme's Fred Rukundo in the 1,000 (2:46.65), Waterford's Smith in the long jump (20-9), Montville's Tyrone Mack in the shot put (49-1.5), Montville's Julian Valdes in the high jump (5-10), NFA's Jacob Bazinet in the pole vault (13-6), NFA's 4x200 relay team of Belton, Jahiem Spruill, Neville Tawdeen and Nazaiah Paul (1:35.22, school record), East Lyme's sprint medley relay team (3:51.25) and Fitch's 4x400 relay team (3:54.87).

    Thirds went to Montville's Derek Strickland in the 55 hurdles (8.27), Ledyard's Brown in the 55 (6.89), NFA's Aidan Croteau in the 600 (1:31.27), Ledyard's Smith in the 300 (37.63), Fitch's Ian Poe in the 3,200 (10:49.22), NFA's Adelino DaVeiga in the shot (48-4.5), Waterford's Kayvon Negahban in the high jump (5-8), Stonington's Hinckley in the pole vault (13-0), Waterford's 4x200 relay (1:36.73), Stonington's 4x800 relay (8:39.18), New London's sprint medley relay (3:55.38) and Waterford's 4x400 relay (3:55.03).

    In the girls' event, local athletes won eight girls' events, including three by Montville, which finished third in the team standings with 54 points behind Canton (64) and East Lyme (63).

    The Indians' Lauren Ross cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump, while the sprint medley team was victorious in 4 minutes, 34.30 seconds and the 4x400-meter relay team won in 4:22.77.

    Other local girls' winners were Ledyard's Olivia Crawford in the 55 hurdles (9.14 seconds), East Lyme's Saige Deveau in the 55 dash (7.60), Stonington's Lindsey Orr in the 1,000 (3:07.43), Stonington's Jessica Detwiler in the 600 (1:43.20) and Norwich Free Academy's Madison Martin in the pole vault (11-8).

    Second-place finishes were recorded by East Lyme's Julia Bates in the 1,000 (3:11.27), Stonington's Megan Detwiler in the 600 (1:43.56), NFA's Paige Martin in the pole vault (10-6), East Lyme's sprint medley relay team (4:42.83) and East Lyme's 4x400 relay team (4:24.81).

    Thirds went to Stonington's Kaleigh Bolduc in the 55 hurdles (9.52), Waterford's Jenny Keth in the 55 dash (7.73), Montville's Mady Whittaker in the 1,000 (3:13.49), East Lyme's Sophie Taylor in the 600 (1:43.95), St. Bernard's Brigid Kunka in the 3,200 (12:09.44), Montville's Ross in the long jump (15-9.5), Stonington's Keegan Donahue in the pole vault (9-0), East Lyme's 4x200 relay team (1:52.88) and NFA's 4x800 relay team (11:04.90).

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard Academy's Phil Rogers won all four matches to win the 174-pound weight class at the Wildcat Open hosted by Johnson and Wales in Providence. The tournament was a non-scoring team event. Rogers had a pin and two technical falls en route to the title match, where he defeated Dan Aknow of LIU Poist 6-4 in the final.

    Also for the Bears, Nick Moreno (165) finished second, reaching the finals before losing to former Ledyard great and ex-CGA assistant TJ Hepburn on a medical forfeit. Moreno pinned three straight opponents to reach the final. Marco Dominguez (149) added a fourth while Jessup Pawelcyzk (197) placed fifth.

    Women's basketball

    • North Country Community College of Saranac Lake, N.Y., ranked seventh in the nation, defeated UConn Avery point 102-67 in Groton. NCCC is 14-2. Rebekah Sanders, a freshman from Waterford, led the Pointers (8-10) with 21 points and 22 rebounds while Mia Brennan of Waterford added 21 points and nine assists and Ashley Burke scored 15 points.

    Men's basketball

    • Host Bridgton Academy edged St. Thomas More 65-62 in the championship game of the Bridgton Winter Classic on Saturday night in Maine. Jair Currie led the Chancellors (17-9) with 10 points while Joel Soriano had eight points and eight rebounds Jared Garcia had nine rebounds and Brendan McGuire finished with five assists.

    H.S. hockey

    • The Eastern Connecticut Eagles clinched a berth in the CIAC Division II tournament with a 6-1 victory over Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks on Saturday night at Enfield Twin Rinks. The Eagles (8-4-1) allowed the game's first goal before exploding for five straight in the first period. Evan Tower led the way with three goals and two assists while Kyle Jacobson added one goal and two assists and Ryan Huta and Will Cannella each scored a goal.

    Men's swimming

    • Bridgeport edged Connecticut College 137-123 on Saturday. Stefan Garbee won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.56 seconds for the Camels (3-3) while Colin Merrill captured the 200 fly in 1:56.54 and the 200 medley relay team of Jaleel Watler, Casey Keenan, Dash Hunter and Mark Klepacki won in 1:36.17.

    Women's swimming

    • Conn College swept a pair of Division II opponents at home on Saturday, defeating Bridgeport 172-84.50 and Assumption 183-78. Maeve Wilber factored into four first-place finishes for the Camels (5-2), winning the 100-yard backstroke in 58.77 seconds, the 200 back in 2:08.31 and swimming on a pair of winning relay teams — the 200 medley team that included Brooklynn Hayes, Vaughn Ammon and Olivia Haskell (1:49.00) and the 200 freestyle team that included Haskell, Kenzie Healy and Micaela O'Malley (1:40.33). In addition, Andrea Higgins won the 200 butterfly (2:08.38), 500 free (5:10.19) and 200 IM (2:12.79) while Maddie Ford won the 100 free (52.53) and 100 fly (59.57).
