Fire forces evacuation of apartment building

Groton - A fire in two second-floor units at the Avery Heights Apartments complex Tuesday morning caused the evacuation of all residents of the Brandegee Avenue residence.

No injuries were reported, according to Groton City Police Sgt. Harry Merritt.

Five departments responded to the scene.

The American Red Cross responded and helped people displaced by the fire. While most building residents were able to return to their homes, a small number of people needed assistance, Red Cross spokesperson Paul Shipman said.

He said that a team of Red Cross volunteers worked with those residents to determine needs for temporary lodging and financial assistance for emergency clothing and food.
