Pawcatuck fire doused before it reaches house

Stonington — Pawcatuck firefighters saved a Liberty Street garage from being destroyed Wednesday afternoon after fire broke out in an adjacent workshop.

Firefighters were at a car accident in downtown Pawcatuck when the fire at 332 Liberty St. was reported at 2:30 p.m. Fire Chief Tom Long said that when they arrived flames were coming from the workshop and garage. Firefighters had the blaze under control in 15 minutes, limiting damage to the garage.

Fire Marshal Kevin Burns is investigating the cause of the fire. He said Wednesday afternoon that it is possible it was caused by an electrical problem in the workshop where homeowner Duncan Robertson had been working shortly before his wife noticed the fire. There were no injuries and the fire did not spread to the adjacent home.

Liberty Street (Route 2) was closed between Route 78 and White Rock Road as firefighters needed access to a fire hydrant across the busy street. The road has been reopened.
