Clues at burglarized home lead police to accused burglar

North Stonington — Clues at the scene of a break-in early Saturday led state police to a Massachusetts man they spotted walking about a half-mile south of the burglarized home, police said.

Troopers responded to a residential alarm at a home on Route 2 at 12:36 a.m. and discovered a broken window pane in the rear door, with blood on the door. There were also shoe prints around the home, police said. While conducting a canvas of the surrounding area, police spotted a male with an obvious hand injury walking south on Route 2. The tread on his shoes matched the shoe prints at the scene, police said. A subsequent state police K-9 track also led police from the residence, south on Route 2 and to where the man was spotted.

Benjamin Alves, 31, of Revere, Mass., was given medical attention for minor cuts to his hands, police said. He was charged with possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal trespass, third-degree criminal mischief and attempt to commit a crime. He was held in lieu of a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Monday.

Police did not say whether there were any occupants in the house during the incident.
