No one hurt in fire in Groton home, but pets perish

Groton - Two people were displaced after a fire heavily damaged about 50 percent of a home on Pleasant Valley Road North this morning.

A dog and a cat did not make it out of the house, said Poquonnock Bridge Fire District firefighter Ted Kunsa.

Just after 9 a.m., a passing motorist reported a fire at 964 Pleasant Valley Road North. When firefighters arrived, "smoke was pushing out from the second floor," said Kunsa said.

Neither resident was home at the time of the fire, Kunsa said.

By 11 a.m., the fire was under control, Kunsa said. In addition to Poquonnock Bridge, the Naval Submarine Base, Mystic, Old Mystic and City of Groton fire departments responded to the blaze. There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Poquonnock Bridge Fire District.
