Boat strikes rocks, runs aground in Little Narragansett Bay

Westerly — Five people escaped without injury when they intentionally beached their boat after the vessel struck rocks off Osbrook Point in Little Narragansett Bay, the second such incident this month.

According to a news release the Watch Hill Fire Department issued Saturday evening, the incident occurred about 4 p.m., when Stonington police received a report that a 34-foot powerboat with five adults on board struck rocks near the mouth of the Pawcatuck River.

The release said the caller told police that the boaters were unfamiliar with the area and were attempting to beach the vessel, which was taking on water, to prevent it from sinking.

Rescue boats from the Watch Hill and Pawcatuck fire departments responded to the area near Seal Rocks and the vessel in distress was located partially submerged in four feet of water, according to the release.

Osbrook Point Road residents assisted the victims to shore, the release said. The five boaters — four females and one male — were evaluated on scene and determined to be uninjured.

TowBoat Mystic was called in to salvage and remove the boat, which was refloated and then towed to Frank Hall Boatyard, according to the release.

Watch Hill Fire Chief Robert Peacock credited the teamwork of first responders and citizens who assisted with helping to limit the damage caused by the accident.
