New London police union to collect turkeys, food, cash Saturday

New London — Members of the city police union on Saturday will be stationed outside the North Frontage Road ShopRite to collect turkeys and nonperishable food items for the Gemma E. Moran/United Way Labor Food Center.

Shoppers also can make cash donations for the police union's Holiday Adopt-a-Family program. The cash is used to provide ShopRite gift cards to families in need.

It’s the 13th year in a row the union has hosted the event, according to Secretary Dustin Adkins. Officials worked with the Capano family, which owns several area ShopRite stores, to organize the collection.

Union members will be at the New London Mall ShopRite from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"With the generous help of the public and from our fellow brother and sister labor union members from southeastern Connecticut, we hope to raise over 3,000 pounds of food and 110 turkeys,” Adkins said. “Just look for the big truck with the police union banner on it."
