State police at Troop E in Montville said troopers stopped an intoxicated driver early Saturday after he drove 17 miles southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 395.

Kory Langan, 37, of Columbus, Neb., was charged with reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving the wrong way on a divided highway and second-degree reckless endangerment.

According to a news release, Troop D in Danielson received 35 calls to 911 about 1:30 a.m. reporting a sport utility style vehicle traveling south in the northbound lane of I-395 near the Plainfield rest area.

Troopers from Troop D, later joined by others from Troop E, located the vehicle in Plainfield and said the driver narrowly missed striking multiple cruisers.

As the car approached Exit 18, Trooper Jonathan Baker deployed stop sticks and deflated three of the car's tires but it continued southbound at a slower speed. The vehicle stopped only after striking the front push bumper of a trooper's car, and Langan was taken into custody without incident.

Langan had driven 17 miles, to Exit 24 in Griswold, without striking any other vehicles before it was stopped, according to the news release.

He was later released on a nonsurety bond and is due Feb. 12 in Superior Court in Norwich.
